Ideado como una actualización de “El Mundial De Los Datos”, un desarrollo del año 2014, “La Copa De Los Datos” es una plataforma que utiliza la Copa América Chile 2015 como pretexto para remixar las bases de datos abiertas del Banco Mundial sobre distintas áreas temáticas con los 12 países integrantes del certamen.
La idea central del proyecto nos permite imaginar que sucedería si en lugar de enfrentarse por sus habilidades futbolísticas, las selecciones participantes de la Copa América se midiesen según datos estadísticos del país que representan.
Veremos entonces selecciones enfrentadas según su demografía, sus Kmts² o la cantidad de habitantes conectados a Internet, escalando hacia las fases finales. Estos enfrentamientos coronarán diferentes campeones según los datos seleccionados, desde el campeón demográfico hasta el campeón con mayor área selvática, por citar algunos ejemplos.
La estructura de “La Copa de los Datos” es idéntica a la de la Copa América Chile 2015. Se inicia con 12 selecciones divididas en 3grupos, avanzando hacia los Cuartos de Final, Semifinal y Final. Según la temática elegida, habrá diferentes partidos, instancias finales y un nuevo campeón.
La navegación horizontal del sitio permite avanzar entre los tres grupos, en tanto que la vertical lleva hacia las fases finales. A medida que se avanza en las etapas, las visualizaciones harán posible apreciar las diferencias entre cada selección teniendo en cuenta la capa de información aplicada en cada caso.
En caso de haber empates el sistema selecciona de forma aleatoria un ganador, esto puede darse en estadísticas medidas en porcentajes o con valores muy bajos como por ejemplo especies de mamíferos o plantas en peligro.

La plataforma permite también que alumnos y profesores completen bases de datos sobre temas investigados en clase, según cada materia, para que juntos puedan ampliar la información sobre los 12 países de la competencia.
Para esto “La Copa de los Datos” provee una sección donde se visualiza la “Fase de Grupos” con casilleros vacíos para incluir los valores trabajados en cada caso. Los usuarios pueden agregar números, porcentajes y descripciones dentro de la herramienta.
Enfrentamientos a Elección “VS”
Teniendo en cuenta que muchas selecciones no se enfrentarán en ninguna instancia de la Copa, desde la opción “VS” el sitio permite crear partidos seleccionando 2 países de los 12 participantes.
La programación de “La Copa de los Datos” se trabajó junto a la gente de Cloudbits, integrando el desarrollo del sitio en PHP5/MySQL con un frontend en HTML5/CSS3 y Javascript.
El diseño y la animación es obra de Máximo Ponz, y las visualizaciones “bubble style” se pueden descargar desde esta galería D3 de Github, utilizada entre otros por el New York Times. Todo trabajado en responsive design para acceder desde cualquier tipo de dispositivo.
